So-called poetry

Release

They said I had died
At four past midnight
They said I had tried
To survive; to fight

‘Twas the head you see
That truly killed me
Caution and safety
Those could not save me

Sometimes I wonder
If ’twas a blunder

Dreams torn asunder
When I went under

But with all this strife
That cuts hearts like knife
And pain that is rife
How good is a life?

So I lie in peace
In white of one piece
Troubles come to cease
Death is sweet release

      1. Hi Sana… yep, all ok now, at least I hope so 🙂
The back problem became a lot worse last week. Bed-ridden etc.. and quite painful.. this time.. Overdid it, thinking I had recovered I suppose. So good reminder for me not to get too cocky 😀

    1. Nah, don’t worry. Waise bhi if something happened, you’d probably be the first one to know. Only doctor I’ve seen on WP (and only doctor I know with a sense of humour in both virtual and real life haha. morbid humour related to syringes doesn’t count)

  1. Did you know almost every blogpost of yours has a tinge of humour? I’m not referring to death here. I’m talking about the category you’ve tagged this poem into – ‘so-called poetry’! It’s funny because it’s so not true! This isn’t so called poetry. This is pretty poetry. Or at least from what little I understand of poetry, this is pretty. Pretty and deep, cynical and true, well-phrased and morbid.

  2. Wow sulphurman. I’m so used to your funny posts but this was real. Amazing. I’ve had the same thoughts myself a couple of times, but you’ve expressed them beautifully!
You have so many talents :O

  3. They say you had died
    at four past midnight
    They say you had tried
    to fight, survive.

    I see your face now
    white, and at ease
    Your body wrapped up
    in one single piece.

    Your eyes seem to say
You finally made it to the sky-
When the world tore your wings
    Your spirit soared high.

You were an angel, a gift
    a lone flower among vile
    You fought, you tried;
    You kept holding a smile.

But I want to tell you, and my tears would say this:
I wish you had waited for just a little more while…

    1. This is beautiful Maria. Like really beautiful. It’s like a tribute to the ones that cannot look back. There’s both happiness at the letting go and the intense sadness of holding back.

      I’m writing this down somewhere.

      Thank you so much.

  4. This was strong and deep. The way you presented it : the 5 syllables of each line packed a punch as I read it.
And the imagery was so beautiful. I could picture “In white of one piece” so vivid and heartening were those words.
The last two lines reminded me of how I read somewhere ” Death is a relief. Relief for the dead. The mourners cry.Cry for a little while. Cry for their selfish needs. For their own plight”
You amaze me. With your funny posts. And your travelogues. With deep sad stuff and poems and with deep sad stuff in your poems.

    1. Ah, thank you so much Aaliyah. Just trying something new. There’s only so much poo people can take Haha.
But in all seriousness, that line is my favourite too. After all at the end that is the only property we’ll carry.
Btw those lines couldn’t be truer. Mourners just mourn because they want to feel happy again. It’s a selfish motive, I agree. That’s why we should let go of the dead.

      1. Ok don’t laugh but when I read the title I thought it was poo related. And laughed shaking my head like Ershad Ershad Ershad!!really?? But when I started reading my mood shifted and I was in awe.
True. It’s hard moving on. The genuine feelings of one’s passing away never really leave.
I hope you are feeling better.

      2. Hahaha, that would be a great title wouldn’t it? Thanks for giving me this brilliant idea. Something new I can plan now. But honestly, I’ve corrupted everyone lol.
Thank you though. I am. 🙂

      3. Hahahah you actually have corrupted people. But most importantly people remember you even if its not something you wish to be remembered by. Like ohh hang on lemme show this to Ershad, he will enjoy this or that reminds me of Ershad!! So really you are famous mate 😉

  5. Because I could not stop for Death (479)
    Emily Dickinson, 1830 – 1886

Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
    And Immortality.

We slowly drove – He knew no haste
    And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
    For His Civility –

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –

Or rather – He passed us –
The Dews drew quivering and chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –

  6. “So I lie in peace
    In white of one piece
    Troubles come to cease
    Death is sweet release”

This is outstanding. The concept of it has crossed my mind several times but I’ve never been successful enough to put it into words- You’ve done it. Reading your poem reminded me of this quote “The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins? – Edgar Allan Poe.

    1. Thank you so much. Death is an enigma. What’s beyond death? Religion tells us one thing. The world tells us something else. We can only hope to ponder, until the moment comes to begin the journey.
I am honoured that my poem reminded you of such a great poet.

Thank you for sharing the quote 🙂
Indeed one cannot tell the difference between living and dying. In physical terms, it’s visible, but in less tangible terms, it’s “at best shadowy and vague.” Like aren’t there people who have never lived even though they survived?

      1. That was a very thoughtful analysis of this conundrum-a food for thought really. Death is a mystery that is only revealed once experienced 😉

It was a pleasure reading this great piece of poetry 🙂
